Young Guns Junior Development Program

Overview

Geraldton Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) launched the Geraldton Buccaneers Young Guns program. The program has been a huge success so far. The GABA plans to have this program continue as a development program. The Young Guns program not only provides huge benefits to the athletes, but is the foundation to develop the culture of basketball in the Midwest.

Young Guns

The Young Guns program was first introduced with the intention of giving our most talented 15 – 17 year old athletes a direct pathway with the best opportunity for success in the sport of basketball. The association will continue to benefit through the Young Guns program with their contributions to refereeing, coaching and mentoring.

Benefits to the Athletes

The program was designed to engage and inspire our athletes, by providing them with a variety of different experiences that will keep them involved in the sport of basketball. Our athletes have already been involved in the following experiences which provide them with inspiration:

Program Details

  • Two squads, 12 men and 12 women in the program (ages 15 – 18)
  • There will be an intake of new athletes in April

The coaches in the program are not only great coaches but role models to the athletes.

Competition

Geraldton and Kalgoorlie are the only SBL clubs not to have Junior teams in the Western Australian Basketball League.

This competition played over the winter months, provides all Perth Associations, as well as Mandurah and Bunbury, with the highest level of competition available to WA juniors. While these players are getting stronger each year, our junior athletes are not playing basketball at this level and therefore, are not being developed to the same standard as the rest of the state. This program will provide a consistent high level training environment to our most talented athletes during the GABA ‘off-season’ and allow for more competitive games when available.

Training Session

Two gym sessions a week at Snap Fitness, working on basketball specific fitness. Trainings will increase leading up to major competitions and games. All training sessions will be based around a similar program to the Senior Buccaneers so junior players who get the opportunity to train of play with the Buccs are not having to learn new plays, drills and defensive structures.

The Young Guns will also be having several high intensity training camps per year.

Commitment of players back to the GABA

All athletes in this special program will contribute to creating a ‘culture’ of giving something back to the game of basketball at a local level. All players within the Young Guns will have some very strict guidelines to be accepted to participate on tours. Athletes will need to:

  • Umpire at least two games per week
  • Coach at least one junior team
  • Assist at GABA camps and/or Aussie Hoops program
If this talented group of juniors are always seen around the stadium with a positive attitude and wearing their Young Guns shirts, this squad will be something that all junior players strive to be a part of and will lift the standard of basketball at the association.
